POLICE ATROCITIES

The abuse of power by the police authority is referred to as a police atrocity. The police have enormous power, but they have begun to abuse it. The Police Act of 1861 mentions the police's powers. A police officer's main or primary responsibility is to represent and protect the public from wrongdoers. It was once a strong and powerful concept, but it has deteriorated over time.
Excessive use of force by police is not new in our culture, and with so many cases of police brutality, it is understandable that the police's primary task, which is to protect the people from wrongdoers, is not being carried out as it should be. Police brutality was prevalent prior to independence, and it continues to be so afterward. "Atrocity by a police officer" is described as "a "a civil rights violation happened when police use excessive force with regards to a civilian that is more than necessary" (Police Brutality, 2008, para.1).
Human beings have many rights; all rights cannot be taken away from an individual because they are their birth rights. Many rights and powers are also granted to the police. However, they have begun to abuse it by infringing on ordinary people's rights. Custodial death, custodial rape, asking for sexual favor in return for leniency, false facts, unlawful imprisonment, beating with cane on spine, beating with rifle but inserting live electric wire in body crevices, custodial death, custodial rape and others.
The rate of police brutality will be reduced significantly if officers start wearing body cameras then they would be aware that their acts are being recorded. The society must force the policy makers to face their own racism.
